Melting Point and Boiling Point

                         Melting Point and Boiling Point

Melting point :-

The melting point is the degree of temperature, when a solid metal changes into liquid .

The melting point of a metal is extremely important from the viewpoint of welding. A metal fusibility is related to its melting point.

Approximate melting point of metals :

Metals melt at different temperatures. The table given below gives the melting points of common metales.

                     Metal

 Melting point    ( °C )

 Tin

 232°C

 Lead

 327°C

 Zinc

 419°C

 Aluminium

 659°C

 Bronze

 882-915°C

 Brass

 926-982°C

 Silver

 960°C

 Copper

 1083°C

 Cast iron

 1232°C

 Monel metal

 1343°C

 High carbon steel

 1371°C

 Medium carbon steel

 1426°C

 Low carbon steel

 1510°C

 Stainless steel

 1426°C

 Nickel

 1452°C

 Wrought iron

 1593°C

 Tungsten

 3410°C

 Gold

 1064°C

Boiling point:-

The boiling point of a liquid is the temperature at which the vapour  pressure of the liquid becomes equal to the atmospheric pressure of the liquid environment . At this temperature, the liquid is converted into vapour.

 Approximate Boiling point given below

 Element

 Boiling point ( °C )

 Nitrogen

 -195.8°C

 Oxygen

 -183°C

 Carbon dioxide

 -78.5°C

 Argon

 -186°C

 Helium

 -268.9°C

 Water

 100°C
